Mission

Vineyard Montessori School (VMS) is an independent non-profit school educating children from preschool to grade eight. An exceptional progressive school, VMS fosters self-motivated, creative, independent thinkers who will develop within themselves the foundational habits, attitudes, skills and ideas which are essential to a lifetime love of learning. The mission of VMS is to follow and execute the philosophy and curriculum for the education of children developed by Italian physician and educator, Maria Montessori. VMS is governed by a volunteer Board of Trustees.

Values

  1. To embrace authentic Montessori principles in order to develop each child’s sense of self-esteem, independence, curiosity, imagination, and life-long love of learning.
  2. To empower children to reach their fullest potential.
  3. To foster respect, compassion, integrity, interconnectedness and social responsibility for children and for one another.
  4. To help children become active, meaningful and caring members of society.

Philosophy

Dr. Maria Montessori believed that no human being is educated by another; one must do it oneself or it will never be done. An educated individual, because he is motivated from within by curiosity and a love of knowledge, continues learning long after the time he leaves the classroom.

The Montessori classroom provides a unique range of materials. Guided by a teacher, the child chooses materials through which he can explore and work at his own pace. In the orderly atmosphere of the classroom, the child’s creative energy is freed, and he develops independence, self-discipline and the “habit of work” as he moves with confidence towards a mastery of skills and ideas.

The highly social atmosphere of this environment stems from a unique combination of freedom and structure founded on respect. A Montessori education fosters the fullest development of child’s potential and provides a foundation for a life of joyful and successful learning.
