Nido Program (Birth – 18 Months)

The Nido—Italian for nest—is a carefully prepared Montessori environment designed to support infants from birth through approximately 18 months. At Vineyard Montessori School, our Nido program honors the earliest stage of life as a profound period of growth, connection, and discovery.

Rooted in Montessori philosophy, the Nido provides a calm, respectful, and nurturing space where infants are free to move, explore, and develop at their own pace— while forming secure, trusting relationships with their caregivers.

Our Philosophy

The first months of life lay the foundation for a child’s physical, emotional, and cognitive development. In the Nido, we view each infant as capable, aware, and deserving of deep respect.

Our guides observe closely, respond thoughtfully, and support each child’s natural development rather than rushing milestones. Care routines—feeding, diapering, and sleeping—and unhurried moments of connection and communication.

The Prepared Environment

The Nido environment is intentionally designed to meet the developmental needs of infants:

  • Low, opening shelving with simple, beautiful materials
  • Movement areas that encourage rolling, crawling, sitting, and pulling to stand
  • Floor beds when infants are 12 months, to support independence and natural sleep rhythms
  • Soft lighting and neutral tones to create a peaceful atmosphere
  • Real, natural materials that engage the senses without overstimulation

Every element of the space supports freedom of movement, concentration, and a sense of security.

Movement & Physical Development

Freedom of movement is central to the Nido curriculum. Infants are given uninterrupted time and space to explore their bodies and environment.

We support:

  • Rolling, creeping, crawling, and walking in sequence
  • Strength, coordination, and balance
  • Body awareness and confidence

Infants are never placed into positions they cannot achieve independently

Sensory & Cognitive Development

Through purposeful materials and real-life experiences, infants engage all their senses:

  • Visual tracking and contrasts
  • Tactile exploration of varied textures
  • Auditory awareness through soft voices and natural sounds
  • Early cause-and-effect understanding

These experiences support concentration, curiosity, and brain development in meaningful ways.

Language & Communication

Language begins long before speech. In the Nido we support communication by:

  • Speaking softly and narrating care routines
  • Using rich, clear vocabulary
  • Offering songs, finger plays, and books
  • Responding attentively to sounds, gestures, and expressions

The respectful communication builds trust and lays the groundwork for future language development.

Care of the Person

Daily routines are treated as essential parts of the curriculum—not interruptions.

Diapering, feeding, and rest times are:

  • Predictable and unhurried
  • Opportunities for one-on-one connection
  • Guided by the infant’s individual needs and rhythms

These moments foster emotional security and a strong sense of self.

Social & Emotional Development

Infants develop a sense of belonging through consistent relationships and gentle group experiences.

We support:

  • Secure attachment with caregivers
  • Early social awareness through observation of peers
  • Emotional regulation through responsive care

The Nido is a peaceful community where infants feel safe, seen, and valued.

The Outdoor Environment

The outdoor environment is a natural extension of the Nido and an integral part of the infant’s daily experience. Time outdoors offers infants rich opportunities for movement, sensory exploration, and connection with the natural world.

Our outdoor Nido space is thoughtfully prepared to support:

  • Rolling, crawling, standing, and early walking on natural surfaces
  • Strength, balance, and coordination through uneven textures
  • Gross motor development without interference or positioning

Infants are never placed into equipment they cannot access independently. The environment invites movement rather than directs it.

A Gentle Beginning

The Nido at Vineyard Montessori School supports the earliest stage of development by honoring the infant’s natural drive to move, communicate, and connect. Through a carefully prepared environment and respectful relationships, infants develop trust in themselves and their world—forming the foundation for independence, concentration, and lifelong learning.
